Abstract

317,492. Hydraulic Brake Co., (Assignees of Bowen, H. C.). Aug. 18, 1928, [Convention date]. Fluid-pressure.-Slight initial movement of a brake lever permits an independent pressure producing device to produce substantially instantaneously a pressure in a fluid-pressure brake system sufficient to remove the slack, independently of any further movement of said brake lever. This pressure, is produced by a source of energy, such as the induction manifold of the vehicle engine, which is independent ot the main source. Brakes 6, Fig. 1, are actuated by the pressure produced in a master cylinder 7 operated by the pedal 11 and a lever 8. A cylinder 13 is connected to the brake pipe 10 and contains a piston 14, Fig. 2, having a threaded piston rod 15, slidably, but not rotatably, engaging bearings 17, 18 fixed to the cylinder. A pinion 22 is supported between the bearings and by means of an internal thread engages the threads on the piston rod. Engaging the pinion is a rack 23 on a piston rod 25 of a piston in a cylinder 27, Fig. 1. The cylinder 27 is normally open to atmosphere past a valve, the stem 33 of which contacts the lever 8. Initial movement of the brake pedal withdraws this lever and allows a spring to move the valve to close the atmospheric ports and open the cylinder 27 to a pipe 36 leading to the induction manifold of the vehicle engine. The vacuum produced in the cylinder thereupon causes the piston therein to move and rotate the pinion 22 and move the piston 14 downwardly to apply an initial pressure to the fluid-pressure system. The thread connection between the piston rod 15 and pinion 22 is irreversible. Release of the pedal 11 moves the valve rod 33 so that the cylinder 27 is connected to atmosphere again and a spring acting on the piston therein returns it and also the piston 14 by means of the rack and pinion 23, 22, to normal position.
