Abstract

351,141. Fluid-pressure brakes. BRAGG-KLIESRATH CORPORATION, 3901, Queens Boulevard, Long Island, U.S.A. April 14, 1930, No. 11809. Convention date, April 16, 1929. [Class 103 (i).] A brake system comprises a foot pedal connected to a valve controlling a brake cylinder and also connected directly to the brakes and means adapted to be initially adjusted whereby the physical force of the operator can be applied to the brakes independently or simultaneously with the force of the brake piston. The brake pedal 188, Fig. 3, is connected by a rod 187 and a lever 177 to brakes B on a tractor and also by a rod 20 to a valve V<1> controlling a brake cylinder P on a trailer, connected to the trailer brakes D. A spring 50 provides a resistance to the movement of the valve casing in order that the valves move relatively thereto to bring about operation of the brake piston and this spring may be adjusted so that the valve operates when the brake pedal is first moved or its tension may be relaxed so that the valve moves bodily for a certain distance while brakes B begin to operate, before the resistance of the spring is increased sufficiently to operate the valve or the tension may be so relaxed that the valve does not operate. The valve comprises a casing chamber 13 in which is connected to the single acting brake cylinder P by a pipe 14. Longitudinal movement of the rod 20 by the brake pedal closes a disc valve 10, Fig. 2, against a diaphragm 8 to close the brake cylinder from the atmospheric ports 18, 19 and raises the diaphragm from a seat 11 to connect the brake cylinder to the suction chamber 12 and a pipe 32 leading to the induction pipe of an internal-combustion engine. The valve casing is mounted in a pivoted yoke 30, having an adjustable stop 35, and the valve casing is connected to a fixed point by the spring 50 which is tensioned on valve operation but may be of the compression type. The partial vacuum introduced into the chamber 13 causes the diaphragm to reseat and maintain the brakes applied at a desired pressure and also produces a reactionary effect on the foot pedal. Brake application and release may thus be graduated. The cylinder may be connected to further actuators by a pipe 14b. A pull rod 180 within reach of the driver may be provided for adjusting the tension of the spring 50 and for temporarily increasing the tension of the spring to operate the valve. The rod is held in adjusted position by mutilated threads. In a modification all the brakes operate on the same vehicle.
