Abstract
316,063. Powell, A. R., Deering, E. C., and Johnson, Matthey, & Co., Ltd. May 1, 1928. Matte processes for platinum group metals.- Metals of the platinum group are extracted from ores, especially copper-nickel ores, and from concentrates, residues, sweeps, &c., by smelting to a matte, forming in or adding to the matte a proportion of free metal of the iron group, or an alloy thereof, which acts as a collector for the platinum metals, and adding a disintegrating agent, such as sodium sulphate or hydroxide, carbonate or sulphide of an alkali or alkaline earth, whereby, on cooling, the free metal crystallizes out in coarse crystals and matte is produced which disintegrates on exposure to the atmosphere; the matte is then crushed and the free metal crystals are separated mechanically, as by a magnetic separator or a shaking table, and treated for the recovery of the platinum metals. The matte may be cooled in ladles and poured off after a crust, rich in platinum metals, has been formed around the ladle, or it may be cooled in conical moulds and the lower part of the matte broken off, or it may be cooled in a furnace at a temperature at which the free metal separates out as a sponge and the still fluid matte tapped off; in each case, both parts of the matte are then subjected to disintegration and mechanical treatment and the free metal in the richer parts may be worked up by fusion with sodium sulphate and silica into a nickel matte amenable to direct wet treatment to recover the platinum metals and nickel, while the free metal in the poorer parts may be used again as a collector in fresh matte.
