Alloys.-In a process for obtaining alloys, such as nickel-copper alloys, directly from ores, a roasted matte containing the metals is subjected to a melting temperature in a furnace in the presence of sulphur-removing slag material; the oxides may be reduced at least partly to metal, and the product treated for the further reduction of the oxides and of the sulphur content. Ground bessemerized nickel-copper matte may be roasted in a mechanically operated furnace and the product discharged into crane buckets, wherein it is treated while still hot with charcoal or other carbonaceous material to effect a substantial reduction to metal; it is then charged into a basiclined furnace, preferably electric, and treated in presence of a basic flux, and the resulting alloy tapped out.
