Abstract
224,923. Edwards, H. May 15, 1923. Alloys.-Tin ores, concentrates, or other materials containing tin oxide, are smelted with lead sulphide or other heavy metal sulphide so as to obtain a matte which is reduced to obtain an alloy. The reducing agent may be iron which may be in the form of tin plate scrap. The tinbearing material may be first roasted and then mixed with lead concentrates, preferably in the proportion of 6 or 8 of lead to 1 of tin, additional iron oxide or other flux being added if necessary. The resulting tin-lead alloy may be treated for the separation of the metals or may be utilized for the production of alloys containing tin and lead. In a modification, iron may be omitted from the charge, a tin-lead matte being obtained which is subsequently reduced with iron. The first Provisional Specifications refers also to antimony sulphide and copper sulphide as suitable heavy metal sulphides.
