Abstract

266,040. Mond Nickel Co., Ltd., and Atkinson, R. H. Nov. 14, 1925. Dry processes of extracting platinum group metals; desilverizing; alloys; treating ores to remove undesired constituents.-In a process for separating gold, silver and the metals of the platinum group from their ores, the finely crushed ore or concentrate is heated with lead and zinc to a temperature above the melting point of the zinc but below the sintering point of the ore. The process is carried out in a reducing or neutral atmosphere and ammonium chloride, or a mixture of chlorides, is added as a flux. Where sulphur is present in the ore, a preliminary roasting is preferably given. The beads of lead and zinc containing the precious metals are separated from the residue and are melted with more zinc or a zinc alloy e.g. an aluminium alloy, in a manner similar to Parkes' process for desilverizing lead. Should the original ore contain iron, the residue, after removal of the metal beads, is treated magnetically, the magnetic constituent being found to contain the major portion of the residual precious metals. In an example of the treatment of a concentrate of an ore containing gold and the metals of the platinum group, 70 parts by weight of the ore are mixed with 40 of lead, 1 of zinc, 1 of ammonium chloride, and 0.5 of charcoal. The mixture is heated at about 600‹ C. in a rotating tube furnace for about 16 hours. The metal beads, consisting mainly of lead, are separated by screening or washing and the residue magnetically treated. The strongly magnetic portion containing iron and platinum is treated for the separation of the platinum by any known method. The remainder of the residue is mixed with 30 parts by weight of lead, 1 of zinc, 1 of ammonium chloride and 0.5 of charcoal and the resultant beads separated. In an example of the treatment of the beads which in this case also contain silver, to 391 parts of the molten metal are added 90 parts of zinc, the surface being covered with charcoal. The mixture is maintained above the melting point of zinc at a maximum temperature of 500‹ C., being stirred every 15 minutes. On cooling, the zinc separates as a crust between 400‹ and 385‹ C. and at 350‹ C. the molten lead is run out, almost the whole of the precious metals being contained in the zinc. The lead is used for further separation.
