Abstract

112,615. Eustis, F. A. Jan. 12, 1917, [Convention date]. Alumina; potassium and sodium aluminates; aluminium, chromium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel sulphates.-Iron ores containing aluminium, with or without other metals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese or chromium are treated for the removal of the whole or a substantial part of the aluminium; the remaining ore may be subjected to a sulphatizing roast to render soluble a large proportion of the incidental metals and the remaining aluminium, if any, but only a small proportion of the iron, or the residue may be smelted after the removal only of the aluminium. The aluminium may be removed from the ore by treatment with sodium or potassium hydrate or sodium carbonate, and precipitated from the resulting solution by a mineral acid or by the addition of aluminium hydrate. The sulphatizing of the ore residue may be effected by roasting at about 460‹ C. with 5-10 per cent of sulphurbearing material, or by heating with sulphur dioxide and a small amount of air at about 460‹ C. The mass is then leached with water or dilute acid, and the solution treated by precipitation or otherwise to recover the metals, the iron-bearing residue being afterwards smelted.
