Abstract
1520175 Metal recovery INCO Ltd 29 March 1976 [2 April 1975] (2) 12597/76 Heading C1A A process for recovering one or more of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Al, Be, Cd, In, Ti and Zn values from a sulphate solution thereof by precipitation as a basic compound comprises treating the solution with lime or limestone with low energy agitation at a temperature, T, of at least 60 C. for t minutes where t is #15 when T#90 C. and t #15 + 3/2 (90 - T) when 60 C.#T#90 C., to form the basic metal compound particles which are much smaller than the gypsum particles also formed, and separating them from the gypsum. A sulphate solution obtained by leaching a lateritic ore containing iron, nickel and cobalt, and magnesium may be firstly treated with magnesium hydroxide to precipitate the metals as hydroxides, separate them from the solution and treat the resultant solution with lime according to the invention to form a fine precipitate of Mg(OH) 2 and a coarse precipitate of gypsum, which may be heat treated to regenerate lime and acid gas.
