Abstract

315,160. Miller, W. J. Oct. 18, 1928. Cataracts and dashpots.-In a device for feeding molten glass, the speed of travel of a plunger is varied by dashpot mechanism in which a piston or plunger reciprocates in a cylinder or a vane carried by an axial shaft oscillates in a cylindrical casing. In one construction, the cylinder 63. Fig. 5, contains an inner cylinder 64 in which the piston 66 slides, both cylinders being filled with oil. The cylinder 64 is formed with a series of outwardly-opening valves 71 and with inwardlyopening valves 73, and the motion of the piston 66 causes oil to circulate between the two cylinders. The circulation of oil is controlled by means of set-screws 73<1>, 76 which enable any valve to be kept closed or the degree to which it opens to be regulated. Modified constructions of the retarding-device are described, in one of which a rod 98, Figs. 9 and 10, with a projecting wing 102 is oscillated in an inner cylinder 103, the space between the rod and the cylinder wall being partly closed by an abutment 110 which extends inwards from the cylinder wall. Oscillation of the rod on its axis varies the spaces between the wing 102 and the abutment 110, and oil is circulated through valves 72, 74 controlled as described above. In another construction, the movement of a piston causes liquid to pass to and from a tank, the plunger being retarded by the resistance offered to the movement of the liquid through the connecting pipes.
