The object of our invention is to provide a novel oil-well pump, eliminating the use of the well knownforms of cups and packing customarily employed, and thereby obviating the constant. wearing thereof and the frequent pulling of the tubing and rods,
etc. V
The invention resides, specific ly, in a novel form of plunger depending om the traveling valve of the pump, and, while such plunger hasbeen shown in the accompanying drawing as associated with the traveling valve of an oil-well pump, it is to be understood that it is adapted forjuse, with equal efficiency and facility, in other situations.
We have shown in the drawing, whichforms part of this specification, only so much and so many parts of an oil-well pump as are necessary for an understanding of the application of our invention. Briefly described:
- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the pump, certain parts being shown in elevation; and p Figure 2'is a fragmentary view, in elevation, of the traveling valve and associated plunger.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawing: 1 designates a portionof one section of the oil-well casing or lining, and 2 the pump-barrel carrying, at its lower end, the stand-valve designated generally by the reference-numeral 3. I 1
4 designates thevalve-stem carrying the traveling valve designated generally by the reference numeral 5.1Screwed' into the lower end of the valve 5 is the hollow plunger-rod 6, a jam-nut 7 being screwed on the upper end thereof and against the lower end of the valve 5.
Encirclmg the plunger-rod 6 are washers Application and February as, 1925. Serial No. .12,417.
8 and 9, of the same ldiameteri'as the borev of the pump-barrel 2. The washer 9Lrests upon a nut 10 screwed on the lower end of the plunger-rod.
- Encircling the spring 11,- one en thereof bearing against the nut 7 and its other'end against the washer 8.
Interposed between the washers 8 and 9 are spherical members 12, of any size, kind or substance, such as chilled shot, or steel balls, of any. suitable diameter, but preferably small, and of a Anumber suflicient t0 compactly fill the space between the collars 8 and. 9 and between the pump-barr'l-2 and the plunger-rod 6. The spherical members make an infinite number of perfect contacts with the pump-barrel 2, and make it possible plunger-rod 6 is a coiled .to dispense with the customary cup-pistons and packings used in oil-well pumps. The spherical members, used as packings, have the advantages over the customary forms of "cups and packings, because they are far more durable and efficient. 1
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as .new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is': t 1. In a piston for. use in a cylindrical caslng-comprising a piston-rod,gspaced Washers onsaid rod and s herical metallic bodies retained between said washers to substantially fill the space between the casing and the piston-rod.
2. In a piston HAROLD A. MOLESI JOHN J VABNER.
ing comprising a piston-rod, spaced washace between the PATRICK e. McKEON.
