Tamping-machines.-Relates to machines for moulding concrete blocks, cores, &c. of the type involving a tamping-element acting progressively upon the material, as described in Specification 237,996, and comprises an element which is reciprocated by a fluid-operated piston controlled by valve mechanism so arranged as to cause the element to progress towards the material. As shown, the material is charged into a mould 4 furnished with wheels 4a running on rails having depressible spring portions 4b over a stationary bed 1 as described in Specification 300,292. The tamping element 3 is actuated by a double-acting piston working in a steam cylinder 6 controlled by a valve actuated from a pin 12 on one of the tamper guide rods through levers 10, 8 and a link 9. The lever 10 is fulcrumed at 11 on an arm 14 secured to a friction wheel 15 adapted to be turned by a friction cam 19 to vary the position of the fulcrum and cause progressive descent of the tamper. A driven shaft carries a friction wheel 21 on the shaft of the cam 19. To cause the tamper to return after a cycle of operations, the cam 19 and wheel 21 are cut away at 19<a>, 21<a>, respectively. In operation, with the tamper reciprocating at the top of its stroke, a mould 4 is run into position and, by means of a handwheel 24, the cam shaft is turned to bring the wheels 21, 22 into engagement causing the wheel 15 to turn and progressively lowering the tamper. After a complete cycle, the cam shaft is disengaged and a spring 17 returns the wheel 15. The cam shaft may be continuously driven.
