Abstract

314,439. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. June 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Cementation; purifying and refining. - In a process for decarbonizing iron or steel by heating to a red heat or melting in an atmosphere of hydrogen, the pressure in the chamber in which they are heated is about 100 atmospheres. The temperature used may be 1000‹ Celsius and the walls of the chamber may be kept at a low temperature. The chamber may comprise an airtight crucible of ceramic material which is heated by high frequency current or electric resistances. The hydrogen is blown into the material continuously and the methane formed during the process removed by treatment outside the chamber, e.g. by selective absorption media, the introduction and removal of the gases forming part of a closed cycle of circulation. After the process is finished, the hydrogen is withdrawn by a pump, the chamber evacuated and the iron heated to a high temperature to expel any occluded hydrogen. The cooling down of the iron after the treatment may take place in a vacuum. Specifications 260,646 and 317,180 are referred to.
