Abstract

313,450. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Whitehead, W.). June 11, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 282,036. Dye preparations.-Textile and other materials made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers are coloured by the application of a solution of a colouring matter having affinity for such materials in a dihydric or polyhyric alcohol, or an ether or ester thereof. Specified solvents are glycerol, diglycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, the mono-, di-, or trimethyl, mono-, di-, or tri-ethyl, and mono-, di-, or tri-prapyl ethers of glycerol, mono- or dimethyl, mono- or di-ethyl, and mono or di-proplyethers of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, and the acetic esters of glycerol or of the glycols. In using a hygroscopic solvent it is preferred to add a quantity of water equal to the maximum amount which the solvent tends to absorb from the atmosphere, thus avoiding changes of volume, viscosity, or concentration of the dyeing liquor. Colouring matters insoluble in water, such as 2 : 4- dinitrodiphenylamine or 1: 4-di-(methylamino) anthraquinone, or others, such as Rosaniline hydrochloride, Cresyl blue, or Auramine, may advantageously be used. Suitable thickeners such as starch, gum arabic, or gum tragacanth may be incorporated in the preparations used for printing. In an example, a cellulose acetate fabric is dyed a fast medium blue shade by padding with a solution of 1 : 4-di(methylamino) anthraquinone in the monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol. Specification 306,534, [Class 15 (ii) Dyeing, Processes &c. for], and 308,173 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the process to textile and other materials in general. This subject-matter does not' appear in the Specification as accepted.
