313,220. Welin, A. March 13, 1928. Davits.-In a luffing davit the velocity ratio of the manually operable luffing mechanism is arranged to be varied independently of the winding-handle. The davit 29 is luffed by the threaded rod 27 engaging with a nut carried by the tube 26, which is revolved by the crank attached to the shaft 1. A sleeve 3 is keyed to this shaft so as to be capable of independent relative longitudinal movement controlled by the pin 11 engaging with the groove 10, but rotary movements of the shaft 1 are transmitted to the sleeve. When the handle 15 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 3 the sleeve slides from left to right, the teeth 5 on the sleeve engage similar teeth 7 on the pinion 9, and thus motion from the shaft 1 is transmitted by the wheel train 9, 16, 18, 19 and 20 to the shaft 21 which is directly attached to the tube 26. Similarly when the handle 15 is in the reverse position motion from the shaft 1 is transmitted by the train 8, 17, 19 and 20, and since the pinions 9 and 17 are of different diameters, two velocity ratios are obtained. In a modification one pinion is directly attached to the sleeve.
