Abstract

313,188. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 9, 1928. Caoutchouc, synthetic.-Polymerization products of diolefines, which are plastic or elastic, or both, are obtained by carrying out the polymerization in the presence of latex and similar vegetable saps, and oxidizing or emulsifying agents. Suitable oxidizing agents include oxygen and gases containing it, hydrogen peroxide, inorganic and organic peroxides, ammonium or sodium salts of perbenzoic acid, persulphates, perborates, or perchlorates of sodium or ammonium, and manganese dioxide; suitable emulsifiers comprise soaps, saponified products obtained by the oxidation of paraffin wax. sulphite-cellulose waste liquor, sulphonated mineral oils, organic sulphonic acids, which are preferably alkylated, and salts thereof, particularly the sodium salts, e.g. toluene sulphonic acid, isopropylnaphthalene sulphonic acid, or butylnaphthalene sulphonic acid. Crude or pretreated caoutchouc latex may be added, and particularly inspissated caoutchouc latex, and the rubber latex known under the registered Trade Mark " Revertex," gutta-percha latex or similar varieties of natural latex are suitable additions. The polymerization may also be carried out in the presence of dialysed latex, and either in the cold or in the warm. Examples are given. The properties of the mixed product may be varied by varying the proportion of diolefine and latex, and by the addition of stabilizers or protective colloids, such as glue, dextrin or proteins, e.g. conglutine or edestine. The product may be vulcanized in the usual way and synthetic resins, for example obtained by condensing cyclic ketones with cyclic phenols or alcohols, may be added. The Provisional Specifications refer to the product as rubber, and also state that the polymerization may be carried out with or without the presence of oxidizing or emulsifying agents.
