Emulsions, making.-Aqueous emulsions of diolefines are prepared by dissolving, in the diolefines and the water respectively, substances which react to form emulsifying agents and mixing the solutions so prepared. For example a solution, in a diolefine, of a fatty acid such as oleic, linoleic or ricinoleic acid or a resin acid is mixed with an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic base, preferably ammonia. The diolefines are subsequently polymerized in the emulsion to form a svnthetic latex. Substances assisting polymerization or promoting subsequent vulcanisation or plasticizing or stabilizing agents may be added to the constituent solutions or to the emulsified product : such substances include oxidizing agents such as benzoyl peroxide with or without substances such as cobalt oleate or manganese cinnamate, proteins, pectins, natural or artificial resins and oils. An example of the process is as follows :-a solution, in 400 parts of B-methyl butadiene, of 5 parts benzoyl peroxide, 0.5 parts cobalt oleate, 12.6 parts olein, 4 parts piperidine piperidyldithiocarbamate and 10 parts linseed oil is added, with agitation, to 500 parts of 0.5 per cent aqueous ammonia containing 10 parts trisodium phosphate, 25 parts of a 5 per cent glue solution and 5 parts of a 10 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide. The emulsion, on standing or moderate heating, polymerizes to a latex and may be coagulated to form a synthetic rubber.
