Abstract
312,838. Midgley, C. A., and Goodwin, J. T. June 29, 1928. Casting slag.-Slag blocks &c. for paving &c. are formed by running slag into a large, shallow frame having detachable side walls and partitions furnished with intercommunicating holes and, after allowing the slag to set, removing the mould members. As shown a frame 7 composed of detachable sides 8 enclosing cross partitions 14 halved together, is located in a pit 4 and covered with a detachable cover 16. Slag is run in through holes 12 in one side of the frame from a contiguous basin 11 and flows into the mould compartments through holes 15. Excess slag is broken away above the cover which is then removed and the blocks are isolated by removing the mould sides and partitions. In a modification, the frame is furnished with short, aligned partitions fitting into grooves in transverse partitions extending across the frame. The mould members are formed of mild steel or a low carbon iron or alloy. Fig. 3 shows the frame assembled on a layer 6 of broken slag, granite &c., adapted to form a rough surface to receive asphalt &c. Sand, silica, or fluor-spar may be added to the slag to improve fluidity &c.
