Rulers.-Writing-pads, notebooks, and the like, comprising a stack of bound leaves are provide.d with a ruler having one of its edges permanently attached to an edge of the pad &c. and foldable into and out of engagement with successive leaves as used leaves are detached, thereby enabling lines to be ruled on each sheet. A ruler for longitudinal lines and another for transverse lines may be provided, the rulers being attached either to the top and bottom edges of the pad or at the edges of front and back covers. The leaves of the pad A, Figs. 1 and 2, are bound together by a binding B at the upper edge and are provided with perforations or the like A<1> which leave a stub A<2> when leaves are detached. Back and front cover sheets C, D are provided. The longitudinal line ruler E, preferably formed from a sheet of heavy paper or cardboard, is bound within the binding B and has a series of longitudinal slots E<1>, through which the point of a pencil can be inserted, the slots being spaced at distances which may be indicated by markings at the top of the ruler. To enable the ruler to lie flat upon the uppermost leaf of the pad the part of the ruler adjacent to the binding is made flexible for example by lines of perforations or deep creases E<2>. The ruler F for transverse lines is connected by a strip of flexible material G to the lower end of the back cover C. This ruler comprises a series of transverse sections united by flexible joints F<1>, and preferably consists of a sheet of tough, heavy paper which is provided with a series of deep slits which form transverse folding-lines; or deep creases similar to the creases E<2> may form the folding lines. The transverse ruler is normally disposed beneath the leaves A and when required for use is brought upon the uppermost leaf and folded back upon itself at the line F<1> at the necessary distance from the edge of the pad, a scale being provided to determine the distances. In another form, adapted for example for a notebook having transverse lines printed upon its pages, longitudinal rulers are connected by flexible hinges to an edge of the back and front covers thereby enabling lines to be ruled on both sides of a page : These rulers preferably comprise sheets of cardboard with wide slots extending at right angles to the printed lines on the pages and separated by solid portions of the same width as the slots, so that the edges of the slots can be used for ruling a series of equally spaced lines upon the pages.
