Abstract

Controlling.-De-clutching is effected by means of a servo-motor or power device controlled by a handle provided on the gear lever, so that when this lever is grasped preparatory to changing gear the clutch is disengaged. The power device may be driven from the vehicle driving gear or may be an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic motor. In the construction shown a cylinder a, having a piston b connected by a cable d with the usual clutch pedal c, is adapted to be connected by a three-way valve i either with the atmosphere or with a pipe g leading to the engine induction pipe. The valve i is controlled through a Bowden wire k by a handle m carried by the gear lever o. When the handle is operated the valve i is turned to connect the cylinder to the induction pipe, the piston b is raised and the clutch is disengaged. Double de-clutching in "changing down" may be effected without releasing the handle m, by temporarily depressing the accelerator pedal when the gear lever is in the neutral position; this breaks the vacuum and lets the clutch in again to increase the engine and gear-shaft speed.
