Abstract

309,588. Akt.-Ges. C. P. Goerz Optische Anstalt. April 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Artificial horizons. - Relates to sighting devices for use on aircraft &c. for determining the vertical direction, and comprising a liquid level of which the bubble is in the focal plane of the objective of a sighting telescope. According to the invention means are provided for illuminating the bubble to enable the instrument to be used at night. The level comprises lenses 1, 2 separated by a glass ring 3, the end faces of which are ground to the curvatures of the contacting surfaces of the lenses, and polished. The space enclosed by the members 1, 2, 3 contains the liquid and the bubble 4. The level is mounted in a sleeve 5 having a lateral extension 6 in which is an electric lamp 7 projecting light through the lenses and through the ring 3. A ring 8, in screw-threaded engagement with the sleeve 5, may be provided to press the lenses and ring 3 together. The entire level device is inserted through a lateral opening in the telescope 9. The lamp may be replaced by a ring of paper &c. coated with radio-active material and contained in a groove 7<1>.
