Abstract

309,497. Spindler, H. April 11, 1928, [Convention date]. Arc lamps; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A mercury-vapour lamp for producing ultra-violet and other photo-chemical radiations consists of tubes 5, open at the top and containing mercury, in which are immersed quartz tubes 20 joined together by a chamber 21 for the arc the tubes 5 being surrounded by a cooling liquid at high pressure and in contact with the mercury so that the pressure inside and outside the chamber 21 is equalized. The container consists of a cylinder 1 closed at the lower end by a cover 4 and at the top by a chamber 2 having a cover 3 with a window 18 provided with a lens 19 of quartz or fluorspar. Cooling liquid such as water or paraffin oil passes through the container and through a coil 9 immersed in a cooling liquid such as water in a jacket 12; a pressure gauge 16 and a cock 17 are connected with the chamber 2. Cooling liquid may also pass through a coil 22. The pipes 20 extend to near the bottom of the tubes 5 and are so long that the arc in the chamber 21 may be started in a barometric vacuum before the pressure is applied to the chamber 2. When this pressure is applied, a concentrated arc at high temperatures is produced. The lamp may be used to produce intra-molecular transformations, polymerizations and condensations, photolysis, hydrolysis, oxidations and radioactive transformations. The synthesis of formaldehyde from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also means for admitting to the chamber 2 the gases or liquids to be subjected to the rays. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
