Hydrochloric acid.-In preparing hydrochloric acid gas from aqueous hydrochloric acid by heating with calcium chloride, the residue of calcium chloride is subjected to reduced pressure, whereby water is distilled and the temperature is reduced ready for use again. Aqueous hydrochloric acid of 30 per cent strength is heated with calcium chloride solution containing not more than 40 and preferably 30 parts of water to 100 parts of calcium chloride. Hydrochloric acid gas is evolved and passed through a cooling coil to separate water. The bulk of the acid passes off before a temperature of 130‹ C. is reached. The temperature is further increased to 165‹ C. when a dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid distils over. The heating is stopped and the residue subjected to vacuum, when water distils over, and a residue containing 30 parts of water to 100 parts calcium chloride, and at a temperature of about 70‹ C. is obtained.
