Blocks and shoes.-A friction composition for brakes comprises a mixture of asbestos, a binder, and a pyrobituminous material or solid bitumen which yields bituminous substances when subject to heat, such as peat, lignite, bituminous coal and coking coal. The coal will become plastic at the braking surface from the heat produced by the braking pressure and will liberate gases condensible at the braking surface and so increase the braking effect. The binder may be an oxidizing or drying oil such as linseed oil. The coal is finely divided, the ingredients are mixed and subjected to pressure in a mould and dried.
