Abstract

307,312. MacCallum, A. E. G. Sept. 5, 1927. Roller and roller-and-breast mills.-In roller grinding mill a positively driven pilot roll or rolls is disposed in advance of the point of engagement of two grinding elements, the roll or rolls being of such dimensions and driven at such a speed as to create a pressure in the material under treatment sufficient to force it between the grinding elements. As applied to a roller-and-breast mill, a breast b is supported on a rail i and is adjustable relatively to the roll a by a screwed rod c and hand-wheel d. A pilot roll e is mounted on brackets h and rotates in the opposite direction to the roll a through gearing from the main power shaft of the mill. A spring-steel scraper f is attached to the breast b and contacts by its free edge with the pilot roller e. The pilot roll e is adjusted relatively to the roller a by means of a screw k and is preferably provided with a grooved &c. surface. The material under treatment is carried downwardly by the grinding roll a towards the breast b but during its progress downwardly the material is picked up in the hollows in the surface of the pilot roll e from which it is removed by the scraper f and accumulates in front of the breast so that the pressure set up in the material forces it between the grinding bar and roll. The drive to the pilot roll may be arranged for variation in speed so as to vary the pressure of the material in front of the block. A device for spreading the material over the roll may comprise the forward edge of a hopper directed against the direction of rotation of the grinding roll, the distance of such edge being adjustable. In a modification as applied to a co-operating pair of grinding rolls, a pair of meshing, grooved or fluted rollers is arranged above the point of contact of the grinding rolls such that each grooved roller touches one of the grinding rolls. The material is forced down between the grinding rolls, the meshing engagement of the two rollers serving to force the material from the grooves as they rotate. The grinding roll may be arranged to reciprocate axially as well as rotate.
