Phenol-furfural resins. - Synthetic resins produced from a phenol and furfural are added to lacquers &c. containing derivatives of cellulose and a volatile solvent. There may also be present natural and/or semi-synthetic resins, plastifiers and also suitable pigments or dyes. The phenol-furfural resin may be prepared by refluxing the materials in the presence of. an acid or an alkaline catalyst, preferably the latter, such as sodium carbonate or tri-sodium phosphate. Suitable phenols include the homologues of phenol, polyphenols such as resorcin &c., naphthols, and their derivatives containing a free phenolic group. Other suitable compounds include methylene diphenol, diphenylol propane &c. A brown resin is obtained, which is purified by washing with water and dilute acid without overheating the resin; it is then freed from water by drying, and is of the reactive type. It may be mixed with other resins in any suitable manner, for example, with a phenol aldehyde resin, preferably phenol-formaldehyde resin prepared by means of an acid catalyst. These mixtures are especially useful where a resin fast to sunlight or ultra-violet light is required.
