Phenol-aldehyde condensation products. - A condensation product obtained by condensing substantially equimolecular proportions of phenol and aldehyde or its equivalent in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as hydrochloric or phosphoric acid or stannous chloride is used together with an organic derivative of cellulose for varnishes. The condensation products contain only traces of products which do not dissolve but only swell in acetone or alcohol, and should be washed with hot water to remove excess inorganic material, and steam or vacuum distilled. Besides phenol and formaldehyde, cresol, 'paraformaldehyde, and like equivalents may be used. Natural resins and plasticizers may be added. The condensation products and cellulose derivatives may be dissolved separately or together in the whole or part of the solvent mixture and dyes, pigments, plasticizers added at any stage. Solvents and diluents are specified.
