Abstract
307,289. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Moss, W. H.), March 3, 1928, [Convention date]. Ketonic-furfural resins.-Synthetic resins produced from acetone and furfural are added to lacquers &c. containing one or more derivatives of cellulose and a volatile solvent. There may also be present natural or semisynthetic resins, plastifiers and pigments or dyes. The ketone furfural resin may be prepared. by refluxing in the presence of any suitable catalysts, preferably alkaline. Suitable ketones, other than acetone, are methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone &c. A yellow resin is rapidly formed, with a strong characteristic odour when crude. lt is purified by washing, followed by distillation, or it may be dried. When freed from water, the resin is brown in colour and melts at 90-100‹ C. It may be mixed with other resins in any suitable manner, for example, with a phenol aldehyde resin, preferably phenol formaldehyde resin prepared by means of an acid catalyst, with phenol furfural resins, aniline furfural resins &c. These mixtures are especially useful when a resin fast to sunlight or ultra-violet light is required.
