Abstract
541,719. Synthetic resin compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and LILLEY, H. S. June 3, 1940, No. 9674. [Class 2 (iii)] A coating composition comprises an alkyd resin, particularly an oil-modified alkyd resin, together with a cross-linking agent, capable of promoting drying of the composition, consisting of a compound containing (a) an olefinic group and a #-diketone group, (b) two #-diketone groups or (c) an olefinic group and a -CH-CHCO- group, such compound being obtainable by a Claisen re-action or condensation from a ketone, preferably acetone, with (a) an unsaturated ester (b) a di-basic ester or (c) an unsaturated aldehyde. Compounds of groups (a) preferably have a carbon chain of 9-17 carbon atoms attached to the #-diketone group ; those of group (b) an intermediate chain of 2-8 methylene groups, and group (c) is exemplified by pseudo-ionone, obtained from acetone and citral. Examples are given of stoving enamels prepared from oil-modified alkyds with an addition, e.g. up to 2 per cent. of a compound of each of the three groups. The alkyd resin may be modified with natural, or other artificial resins, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde, or may be blended with other film-forming materials, e.g. cellulose derivatives.
