Soldering.-Joints be tween parts of a can, tin, &c. are rendered fluid-tight by subject. ing the joint to combined heat and pressure in order to unite the tin on the contacting parts. The operation is effected by two or more jaws a actuated by hand nr power to engage the whole of the joint, the jaws being heated as by an electric resistance c supported between fireclay plates within the jaws. The operative portion of the jaws is shaped to conform with the work, and may be thermally insulated from the jaw-holder. The jaws are detachably mounted, to permit replacements to be made. A suitable working temperature is stated to be 550‹ F. The machine may be designed so that the making and breaking of the heating circuit is automatically controlled by the actuation of the clamping jaws.
