Abstract
18,336. Gross, J. Aug. 7. Electric and gas hand-irons ; reversible hand-irons. -Comprises an iron provided with two ironing - faces heated by different kinds of heating medium, so that when one source of heat fails the iron may be reversed and heated from the other source. In the arrangement shown the two faces 12, 13 are heated respectively by electricity and gas, and are detachably secured together by screws passing through lugs 33 in the upper part. The upper face 12 contains a suitable electrical heating element 14 enclosed between an insulating-layer 25 and an asbestos layer 26, the latter being secured by a metal plate 27. The lower face is heated by an atmospheric gas burner 15 which at its outer end forms one of the pivots of a reversible handle 11 held in position by a set-screw 17 engaging one of two holes 16. The nipple portion 18 of the burner may be unscrewed when the burner is not being used. The band of the operator is protected by the unused upper surface from the hot portion of the iron. The products of combustion from the burner escape through holes 23 and through openings between the lugs 33.
