Abstract

540,519. Welding; uniting by fusion. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Sept. 5, 1940, No. 13890. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1939. [Class 83 (iv)] Steel rails, plates, pipes, structural members &c. are welded by bringing the parts into abutment; applying heat and pressure to effect a pressure weld and then fusing the outer periphery of the joint whilst this is still hot so as to close up the fissure F caused by flaring of the ends of the work consequent on the pressure applied. The ends of the parts may be previously ground, planed or turned so that the surfaces are substantially plane and are in contact over the entire area of the surface. Heating may be effected by electric resistance or induction, or by oxy-fuel gas flames which may be applied at the joint I or at distances not more than one inch therefrom so that the heat may be conveyed indirectly to the surfaces entirely by conduction. One or more sources of heat may be applied to either side of the joint or to opposite sides of the work. In one form the source of heat may be reciprocated over the work at the joint. In welding pipes P the parts may be placed under a pressure of 500 to 6,000 lb. per sq. inch and heated by one or more annular burners R, R<SP>1</SP> to 1000 to 1300‹ C. This burner or a separate source of heat is then brought over the joint to fuse the outer edges throughout the depth of the fissure F to complete the joint at W.
