Abstract
306,471. Selden Co., (Assignees of Jaeger, A. 0.). Feb. 21, 1928, [Convention date]. Reduction products or organic oxygen compounds and oxides of carbon.-The catalysts described in Specification 304,640 are used for the reduction of oxides of carbon or organic compounds containing oxygen such as ketones, aldehydes, acids, esters, alcohols, ethers, &c. Oxides of carbon may be reduced to formaldehyde, methyl alcohol or methane, or in presence of alkaline stabilizers which cause condensation to higher alcohols, ketones, acids, such as propionic or butyric acids, and hydrocarbons of a petroleum character. Ketones may be reduced to secondary alcohols such as acetone to isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketones to secondary butyl alcohol. Aldehydes are reduced to primary alcohols, such as acetaldehyde to ethyl alcohol, crotonaldehyde to butyl alcohol, valeraldehyde to corresponding alcohol, and benzaldehyde to benzvl alcohol. Esters are reduced to aldehydes or alcohols, such as phthalide to benzaldehyde or benzyl alcohol. Acids are reduced to inner esters or alcohols, 'such as phthalic anhydride to phthalide or to benzaldehyde or benzyl alcohol, camphoric acid to a-campholide &c. Quinones such as anthraquinone, benzoquinone, &c. are reduced to the corresponding hydroxy compounds. Phenol is reduced to benzene. The reducing agent may be hydrogen, aliphatic hydrocarbons such as paraffins, olefines, acetylenes, &c. or carbon monoxide, and vapours of aliphatic alcohols may be added. Combination may occur between the vapours of aliphatic or aromatic compounds and the oxides of carbon during the reduction.
