Hydrocyanic acid. - The treatment of coke oven gas, coal gas, or like gases in an electric arc. by which treatment hydrocyanic acid is obtained if nitrogen or a nitrogenous compound is present, is improved by converting the carbon monoxide in the gases into innocuous compounds, for instance by converting it catalytically into methane or by decomposing it with steam, prior to treatment in the arc, the heat of the gases issuing from the arc furnace being used to preheat the gases before the conversion of the carbon monoxide.
