Abstract
304,556. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges.). June 5, 1928. Thermometers. - A thermometer for measuring the temperatures of flat or curved surfaces comprises a thermocouple of band or strip form mounted on a support which is provided with means for pressing the thermocouple junction into contact with the surface. In Fig. 1 the support comprises arms 1, 2 pivoted together at 3 and urged apart by a spring 6 which can be adjusted by a knob 5. Pivoted to the ends of the arms 1, 2 are levers 9, 10 having pointed outer ends 15, the thermocouple 16 being attached to the levers 9, 10 with the hot junction 14 lying centrally between them. The parts 13 of the levers are so shaped that when the thermocouple is applied to a flat or concave surface the levers are rotated to cause the points 15 to press the junction 14 into contact with the surface. In a modification, Fig. 5, the supporting arms 26 are provided at their ends with discs 28 to which the levers 30 are pivoted Pivoted at 31 to the levers 30 are two levers 32 which at their upper ends 33 are pivoted to a spring-controlled plunger 23 so that when the plunger is depressed by hand the levers 30 are rotated to cause the plates 36 which they carry to bear on the junction 37. The ends of the thermocouple 29 are attached to the discs 28. In another form the levers 30 are dispensed with and the plunger 23 is extended downwardly, terminating at its lower end in a fork which presses on the thermocouple strip when the plunger is depressed. One element of the thermocouple is preferably made of constantan and the other of an alloy of beryllium with a metal such as copper, nickel, cobalt., or iron.
