Abstract
303,919. Beatty, W. E., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). Oct. 17, 1927. Cables, arrangement and disposition of parts of; cables with auxiliary conductors; armouring cables.- A submarine cable comprises a return conductor of metal having a greater conductivity per unit of weight in water than copper. The return may be in the form of a tape or of wires partially replacing the armour wires of the cable. In the embodiment the return tapes are formed of aluminium, or of one of the aluminium alloys having the following compositions :-98.4 per cent aluminium, 0.7 per cent magnesium and 0.8 per cent silicon; or 94.3 per cent aluminium, 4 per cent copper, 0.8 per cent manganese, 0.6 per cent :magnesium and 0.3 per cent silicon. A central conductor 3 is helically wound with copper strips 4 and loading tape 5. Guttapercha insulation 6 separates the tape 5 from the return conductor 7 which is laid over with steel armour wires 9 bedded in jute. In a modified construction, the tapes 7 are dispensed with, and some of the steel wires 9 are replaced by wires of one of the aluminium alloys which form the return conductor. Specification 244,478 is referred to.
