Abstract
303,776. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 8, 1927. Mineral and tar oils.-The viscosity of mineral oils of any origin is increased by subjecting them in the coherent liquid phase to high tension electric treatment with alternating currents of frequency substantially above 500 cycles per second, but less than 10,000 cycles. Ionizable substances, such as alcohols, phenols, &c. are preferably excluded. E.g., a middle fraction of a cracked brown coal tar oil of viscosity 1.2 Engler is treated for 30 hours at 12,000 volts, 7,000 cycles under an absolute pressure of 0.01 atmos. The resulting oil has a viscosity of 125.
