283,159. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges., (Assignees of Hofmann, F. and Wulff, C.). Jan. 5, 1927, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils, extracting.-Oil is extracted from destructive-hydrogenation residues containing oil, solid coaly matter, and inorganic matter, by treatment with liquid sulphur dioxide. In an example 500 lb. of a residue from the destructive hydrogenation of coal is crushed, and treated with liquid sulphur dioxide in an Edeleanu apparatus for refining mineral oils provided at the bottom with a filter. 260 lb. of a viscous oil are obtained. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the treatment of oil-shale or other materials containing oil and solid coaly material with or without mineral matter by means of liquid sulphur dioxide mixed or not with benzene or other solvent. Any suitable temperature and pressure may be used, and the solution of extracted matter may be used repeatedly as solvent. In an example a product of the destructive hydrogenation of coal is extracted at 80‹ C. and 20 atmospheres pressure. This subject-matter dbes not appear in the Specification as accepted.
