Abstract

Lubricating oils are obtained from asphalt-containing petroleum residues by extracting the residue with a C3+ hydrocarbon-aliphatic alcohol mixture, separating the asphaltic raffinate from the oleaginous extract, at least partially removing the C3+ hydrocarbon-alcohol mixture from the extract, and subjecting the de-asphalted oil, or solution, to catalytic treatment with hydrogen. Prior to extraction, pentane or other low viscosity hydrocarbons may be added to inhibit precipitation of asphaltenes. The hydrogenation treatment may be effected in the presence of, for example, nickel and/or cobalt sulphide and molybdenum and/or tungsten sulphide on an alumina/silica carrier preferably at 370-430 DEG C. and at least 100 atmospheres. This may be followed by a second hydrogen treatment at a lower pressure, preferably between 250 DEG and 360 DEG C. The product may be subjected to vacuum fractionation, extraction and dewaxing.
