Abstract
305,553. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 5, 1927. Mineral and tar oils.-Lubricating and insulating oils are obtained from coal, tars, mineral oils, and other carbonaceous materials by extracting or destructively hydrogenating the solid materials or cracking or destructively hydrogenating the liquids, and exposing the liquid or fractions thereof, in the coherent liquid phase, to the action of high-tension and preferably high-frequency electric currents. Preferably the extraction, cracking, or destructive-hydrogenation is so carried out as to produce as much product of the middleoil type as possible. The electric treatment may be conducted in presence of hydrogen or other gas, of catalysts or inert material, and at reduced, raised or ordinary pressure. In an example, brown coal is treated with hydrogen at 450‹ C. and 200 atmospheres. Of the product a fraction boiling up to 300‹ C. is treated for several hours with a current of about 10,000 volts and 500 periods. The resulting viscous products are separated by distilling off the lower-boiling constituents, these latter being again treated.
