Abstract

303,226. Proctor, H. A., Holliday, J. F., and Buell Combustion Co., Ltd. Oct. 15, 1927. Pulverulent-fuel burners.-In a burner for pulverized solid fuel, the fuel and primary air are given a vibratory or turbulent and rotary motion on issuing from a delivery pipe d by rifling, grooves d<1> and are then mixed in the burner with secondary air or other gaseous fluid which has been preheated to such a temperature as to distil or release some or all of the volatile constituents of the fuel. The secondary air is supplied through ports a<3> formed in the outer burner casing a, a<1> and passages b<2> in an inner casing b, the passages b<2> being inclined, so that the direction of flow is contra-wise to the direction of rotation of the fuel. The mixture so formed passes around rifling e<2> on the conical mouthpiece e<1> of a pipe e and through an agitating or dispersing device which comprises a ring l carrying two or more curved ring-members m spaced apart by curved web-pieces m<1> to form passages n, n<1> imparting rotary motion to the fuel in the same and the opposite direction to that imparted by the rifling grooves d. The ring-members m are formed with staggered apertures m<2>. The mouth of the ring l is formed with an annular internal bead l<1>. The mixture is then further mixed with preferably pre-heated air supplied to the outer casing a, a<1> through ports b<3> from a casing c, the ports b<3> being regulatable by means of a recessed plate f operable by a knob k through rack-and-pinion gearing g, h. The mixture is checked just before discharge by a projection a<2> on the burner casing. Air and liquid fuel may be supplied through an atomizing device arranged in the pipe e to initiate combustion of the pulverulent fuel. Superheated steam and air may be subsequently supplied through the pipe e. The pipe e may be adjustable axially.
