Abstract
302,283. Soc. Anon. des Manufactures des Glaces et Produits Chimiques de St.-Gobain, Chauny, et Cirey. Dec. 13, 1927, [Convention date]. Rolling. - Relates to the method of making sheet glass in which a mass of glass q, Fig. 1, is poured from a ladle p or a melting-pot on to a receiving- table d whence it passes between rollers a, b and is formed into a sheet. According to the invention, a plate i is used to prevent the glass from flowing between the rollers until it has spread out evenly between side plates e. The plate i is then raised and the mass of glass advances towards the rollers a, b with a rectangular leading-edge, so that the sheet is formed with a straight leading-edge and wastage of glass is reduced. The plate i may be secured to arms g which are pivoted to the frame of the machine or to the side plates e, so that the plate is raised when the arms are swung backwards. The table d, instead of being flat, may have its upper surface rounded or formed with a central ridge to assist in spreading out the mass of glass. The face .of the plate i, against which the glass is poured, may also be curved or angular, and its lower edge may be in contact with the table for only a part of its length.
