Abstract

300,931. Daneel, R. H. Aug. 16, 1927. Inflating, special methods and accessory device for use in connection with.-Relates to means for inflating pneumatic tyres in which an air line 13, 38 is maintained between the inner tubes and inflating means located on the chassis by means of air passages in the fixed and rotating portions 26, 28 of the hubs of the wheels. According to the invention, the air passages in each hub are connected by a chamber 28<1> which communicates with an air sealing means 30 which is rendered effective by the air pressure in the chamber. The invention is shown in Fig. 8 embodied in a special hub cap for attachment to a stub-axle 26. The stationary portion of the air passage is formed in a nut 21 adjustably fixed to the outer end of the stub axle and having a spigot entering the chamber 28<1> formed in the rotary member 28 which chamber contains a spring 29 pressing on a sealing washer 30. A washer 25 is also provided between the nut and the outer end of the stub axle. The portion 13 of the air line is connected to the inner tube and the portion 38 to the inflating means which may be a pump driven from the crankshaft of the propelling engine. Figs. 1 and 2 show a control nut on the dash board fitted with pressure gauges safety valves and adjustable vents 10 for each tyre. The inflation valves for each tyre are removably mounted in recesses 5 on the control unit to permit of their being transferred to the tyres if necessary.
