Abstract

300,810. Cottrell, H. T., and Dodson, F. Dec. 12, 1927. Locking by frictional detents; disc.-An automatic brake for prerventing unintentional movement of automobiles comprises an externally screw-threaded sleeve 12 slidable longitudinally but not rotatable on the transmission shaft, an internally threaded nut 14 engaging the sleeve and flanges 15 on the sleeve and the nut adapted to engage a member rigid with the vehicle frame when the nut screws on the sleeve on backward movement of the vehicle. The nut is allowed only a limited circumferential movement relative to the sleeve by means of a key 17 fixed to the nut and engaging a circular recess 19 in the sleeve. This movement is also modified by a helical spring secured to the sleeve and the nut. The engaging flanges 15 may be conically projecting or recessed or may be reversed as shown in Fig. 6.
