Abstract

Magneto-electric machines.-In a magneto, particularly for cycle lighting, of the type in which the axes of the magnet limbs and armature coils are parallel with the axis of rotation, the rotor spindle can be moved longitudinally by adjusting one or both bearings for the purpose of varying the air gap. As shown applied to a cycle-lighting machine, the armature coils 30 are carried bv cores 29 held in a fixed yoke 28 and the spindle 6 carries the field system comprising bar magnets 26 held in a yoke 25. The upper bearing 4 of the spindle is accommodated in a neck 2 of the casing and is pressed against a shoulder 7 on the spindle by a screwed sleeve 8 acting through a flat ring 9 and locked by a nut 10. The lower bearing 20 is housed in a cap 19 screwed into a neck 21 of the casing, and locked in position by means of a disc 23 having notches engaged by a fixed locking member 24. The disc 23 and a cover 39 are clamped by a screw 40. By adjustment of the sleeve 8 and cap 19, the air gap 27 can be varied. In a modification, the upper bearing is pressed against the shoulder 7 or the spindle by a spring plate so that adjustment of the lower bearing only is necessary. In another modification, Fig. 4, the upper bearing 4 is fixed and the shaft is in two portions 6<a>, 6b having a spring 38 for preventing end play.
