Abstract

299,868. Alkt.-Ges. der Maschinenfabriken Escher, Wyss, et Cie. Nov. 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Surface condensers.-In a surface condenser in which steam entering through an opening in the top converges to an outlet opening in the bottom, cooling water enters at the bottom through inlets 11, 12 and passes from water chambers 8, 9 through longitudinal tubes 1 located in the upper portion of the water chambers above bends 6, 7 to a water chamber at the other end, whence it is led through other tubes 1 located at the bottom of this compartment and below the level of the bends 6, 7 which lead back to the front of the condenser to a chamber 10 and leaves the condenser through an aperture 13. The arrangement is such that although steam is admitted from the top and cooling water from the bottom, the steam contacts first with water which has not been heated by previous contact with the steam. In modified forms the cooling water is arranged to flow to and fro twice.
