Abstract

297,720. Parsons, O. H. June 20, 1927. Dynamos, driving.-An apparatus for generating electrical energy from the wave movement of the sea comprises a hollow buoyant body containing a weighted arm rigidly secured to a bevel gear connected to a generator through a train of gearing whereby unidirectional rotation is transmitted to the generator when the buoyant body is rocked. In one form, Figs. 2 and 3, a buoy 1 is surmounted by a dome 2 containing a bevel wheel 14 journaled in bearings 9 carried by a plate 3. To the bevel wheel is secured an arm 11 carrying a heavy pendulum weight 13. A shaft 18 carried in bearings 19 has a pair of bevel wheels 20 meshing with the wheel 14. The wheels 20 are connected to the shaft 18 by free-wheel clutches of the ratchet-and-pawl or ball type and the generator is chain driven from a pulley 21 on the shalt. As the buoy is rocked by the waves, the pendulum swings in a vertical plane, and the oscillations of the wheel 14 are converted by the free-wheel clutches into rotational movement of the shaft 18. A rudder or fin 36 is provided so that the buoy may rock in one plane. The current may be employed for lighting a lamp 6 housed in a glass cover 5, and in addition a bell or other sound annunciator may be provided. In a modification, Figs. 9 and 10, a rotatable main shaft 75 carries a bevel wheel 76 to which is secured a curved arm 84 weighted at 85. A transverse shaft 78 journaled in a central bearing 79 carries at one end a bevel wheel 80 meshing with the wheel 76 and at the other end a pinion 81 meshing with a pinion 82 on the shaft of the generator 83. In this modification, the weighted arm performs a continuous circular movement. The invention may be applied to ships, for example to lightships. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement by means of which the current generated in a number of buoys 53 is transmitted to the shore. The conductors 57 from the buoys are led over pulleys 56 on a yard-arm 55 to the mast 54 of a ship and weights 58 are provided for taking up the slack. Conductors 60 transmit the current to the shore. In a modification dispensing with a ship, the conductors from the buoys are secured in a similar manner to a post on the shore.
