Abstract

297,168. Crabtree & Sons, Ltd., R. W., Evans, A. B., and Taylor, H. M. July 2, 1927. Sheet separators. - In automatic sheet - feeding mechanism for printing and like machines of the type in which the printing mechanism is tripped if the sheet is mislaid or missing, but is untripped when the sheet is registered correctly, mechanism is provided for checking the feeding of the sheets when a sheet is mislaid, and for automatically recommencing the feed upon correct registering of the mislaid sheet. The sheets are normally separated and fed from the rear of a pile 1 by suction nozzles 2 carried by a hollow shaft 3 supported by hollow levers 4 from a hollow shaft 5 connected to a suction pump. A sleeve valve 7 connects the shaft 5 to atmosphere before a sheet is separated, and a stop 11, Fig. 1, closes this valve to permit the suction to act on the top sheet which is taken by the nozzles 2 and carried to the position 6, Fig. 3, before the valve 7 is again operated by a stop 12 on a lever 13 to release the vacuum and permit further advance of the sheet. The lever 13 is operated by feeler-controlled mechanism in such a way that, should the printing-mechanism be tripped, the lever will be moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the valve 7 will not be operated, and the sheet will remain attached to the nozzles 2 and will be released therefrom only when the feeler mechanism permits operation of the printing-machine.
