Abstract

Land wheels, runners, and skids; floafs, arrangement and disposition of.-In an undercarriage for aircraft having folding wings, the wheels, floats, &c. are interconnected with the wings so that as the wings are folded, the wheels &c. move so as to preserve the balance of the aircraft on the undercarriage to ensure easy handling. As shown, wheels 5 are carried by curved struts 6 pivoted to the fixed central wing-portion 1, additional struts 9, preferably incorporating shock absorbers, being pivoted between the outer ends of the struts 6 and portion 1. The struts 6 are also connected to the folding wings 3 bv members 7 so that as the wings are folded back about the pivots 4, the undercarriage takes up the position shown in dotter lines in Fig. 4. In the case of heavy machines additional removable struts may be provided. If skids are employed in addition to wheels, these may be carried by stays pivoted to the struts 6 and 7. In the case of sea-planes, the invention enables the craft to be taxied with its wings folded.
