Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - A mercury vapour lamp, particularly for producing ultra-violet rays, has a chamber a at each end and a resistance B disposed in proximity to, but not around, the centre of the lighting tube, and in such a position as not to obstruct the rays, the lamp when cold containing sufficient mercury to fill the tube and partially fill the chambers to a level not lower than the top of the tube. The resistance is mounted in contacts e<1>, and is connected in series or parallel with the lamp, or in a separate circuit. Flexible brackets e supporting the lamp are mounted on a reflector C carried by a holder D.
