Abstract
293,854. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Shand, E. B.). July 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - A mercury-vapour rectifier is provided with a stationary exciting electrode and a movable starting-electrode, so arranged that the arc is struck by the starting-electrode and then transferred to the exciting electrode. The exciting electrode 6 is of steel and is carried on a steel tube 7 passing air-tight through the sealed lid 8 of an exhausted tank 1 containing the working anode 2 and the mercury cathode 3. The starting electrode 4 is carried on a rod 5 passing through the tube 7 and carrying an armature 12 which is attracted by a solenoid 13 to cause the electrode 4 to dip into the mercury 3. The solenoid is in parallel with the electrode 4 so as to be short-circuited when the electrode makes contact with the mercury, whereon a spring 11 raises the electrode and strikes the arc. The electrode 4 is then withdrawn inside of the electrode 6, and the arc is transferred to the rounded edge of the latter. The solenoid 13 and the electrodes 3, 4 are supplied with current from the main circuit through a transformer 28 and rectifying devices 30. -
